Eggs Fun

Primary 7C had an egg decorating competition on Thursday afternoon. They had to decorate a hard boiled egg to be a character of any kind. Ms Gaffney kindly agreed to be the judge and later confessed to me that it was very difficult as the standards were high. Robbie took first prize for his Scottish bagpiper, Ruby and Katie were second with Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck and Rachel took third.

Ration Recipe Come Dine With Me

Primary 7C were busy today making desserts based on ration recipes from World War 2.  We began the day by learning about John Boyd Orr, a Scot who worked on researching peoples diets between the wars.  It was many of his ideas that were adopted by the Ministry of Food as part of the rationing programme.  Next, our class, worked in teams to make one of 3 ration recipes: health bread, sugarless apple dessert or fruit crumble.  There was also an added challenge, that you could bring in ingredients from home, that would have been available in war time Britain to enhance your recipe.  Three of the boys' groups made fruit crumbles and the other made the sugarless apple dessert.  They were all yummy and the smells emanating from the kitchen were drawing attention.  Mr McKenna acted judge for the boys round and chose Dylan, Dee-Jay and Atharva's crumble as the one that most tickled his taste buds.

 After break it was the turn of the girls who made two health loaves, an amazing strawberry juice and sugarless apple dessert combo and a fruity crumble.  A slight hiccup occurred when we realised the oven, while it looked on was actually on slightly the wrong setting (whoops) so we judged the uncooked recipes first.  It was a close run thing but Mrs Nowell, felt that Automne and Katie's sugarless apple dessert just edged it because of the spices.  She loved the creativeness of the other one but felt it was a little sweet for her particular taste.  Thanks to Maisie for also supplying rhubarb for Automne and Katie as she was due to be in their group but was travelling off on holiday.  Then we cranked up the temperature on the oven and attempted to speed up the baking process for the other three.  This obviously cooked the outside but we had to take it out earlier than we would have liked so the health bread was a little gooey in the middle (the sides were baked well).  The ever lovely Mrs Nowell helped us tidy the last of the dishes and stayed to judge the last 3.  Again it was close but Jenny, Ana and Emma won out with their tasty health bread.  

It was lots of fun and I would like to say thank you to my class for their enthusiasm and creativity.  They took on the challenge with gusto and I very much enjoyed sampling their delicious dishes.  Apologies for not having pictures of the girls, we had less time in the second session and I forgot to take more.

Dr Bunhead visits the science club

Our special Sciennes friend, Dr Bunhead, visited the science club this week to bring our unit on burning to a close with a bang!  We have been finding out about what is needed for combustion and carrying out experiments and making and testing hypotheses.  

This week Dr Bunhead showed us different things that can be fuels, how different things burn different colours and even showed us how water can insulate against fire so that he was able to set fire to a gas on Elias' head without setting his hair alight.  He even created an explosion in the science base which made lots of us scream because it was so loud (it wasn't just me who screamed, honest).

Cricket in the Meadows with Mr Kearton

Thank you Mr Kearton for setting up an impromptu game of cricket for P7 in the Meadows at lunch break last week.

Lothian Schools Cross Country Silver Medal for Lucia

Here is Lucia in P7A with the Silver medal she won in the Lothian Schools Cross Country.

Congratulations to Lucia in P7A who came First in five of the seven races she ran in the Wednesday Lothian Schools Cross Country League (only missing one of the eight races this season when she was at Lagganlia) and was awarded an individual 2nd place medal.

Lucia's mum, Rosemary Free, has been instrumental in involving so many of our pupils taking part in this competition, and it has had a dramatic effect on Sciennes' achievements in other running competitions, such as the EPSSA Cross Country event on Monday.

We all hope that Sciennes pupils will continue to take part in this event in the coming years, with more children joining in.

Lucia's mum congratulates all the pupils who have done so well over the weeks, with a great team spirit, and hopes the P6s will carry on with new P5s getting involved next year. For future reference, each of the 8 weeks in the competition counts for points, with four people needed for a team (earning 4 points each week) and points awarded for 1st-10th places: 10 points for 1st, 9 for 2nd and so on. So the more the merrier!

P7C National Archives

What a wonderful trip with P7C to the National Archives (formerly known as the Scottish Records Office) at Register House on Princes' Street. Margaret and Pat led the children through interesting activities in a free workshop examining archive material about the bombing of Greenock in the Second World War which really brought events to life, and home to the pupils. Very impressive questions and answers from the class which showed not only what they have learned already about the war, but also how they could apply their thinking.  A pleasure to accompany, and grateful thanks to Jenny's dad for coming with us.
